Louisiana Food Stamp Program

The amount of Food Stamps a household can receive in Louisiana is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Thrifty Food Plan, which is an estimate of how much it actually costs to provide a household with nutritious but inexpensive meals. This cost estimate is revised periodically to keep pace with food prices. Louisiana does not provide for exceptions to the Federal Thrifty Food Plan.

Eligibility for participation in the Food Stamp Program is based on financial and non-financial criteria.

·        Financial criteria consist of income and resource considerations.

1.   Income - Household eligibility for most applicant households (except elderly, disabled or categorically eligible households) is determined by comparing the monthly income of he household to a maximum gross income limit and a maximum net income limit. Certain deductions are allowed in calculating the household’s monthly net income. The food-stamp monthly net income is then used to determine the household’s coupon allotment.

2.   Resources - The other financial eligibility criteria consists of a comparison of the household’s resources to the allowable resource limits. Most households may have a maximum of $2,000 in resources. Households, which have an elderly member, may have a maximum of $3,000 in resources.

·        Non-financial criteria of eligibility consist of residency, citizenship, eligible alien status, non-institutionalization, work registration, social security number, eligible student status and work requirements.
