Two categories of people can be eligible for Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program (FITAP) benefits in Louisiana:
1. A woman in the last trimester of pregnancy who is:
· In need; that is income and resources available will not meet her needs. The Office of Family Support has standard amounts designed according to the number of persons in the grant from which income is subtracted to determine need.
· MUST be a resident of Louisiana
· MUST be a citizen of the United States or meet alien eligibility requirements.
2. A family with a child who meets all of the conditions below:
· The child MUST live in the home of one of these relatives: father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, great grandparents or spouse of either, brother, sister, aunt, stepfather, stepmother, stepbrother, stepsister, first cousin, nephew, or niece.
· The child MUST be in need; that is income and resources available to care for the child will not meet his/her needs. The Office of Family Support has standard amounts designed according to the number of persons in the grant from which income is subtracted to determine need.
· If the child’s parent(s) is not in the child’s home, the absent parent is expected to support his/her child, and efforts to secure support from the parent must be pursued to the extent provided by Federal and State law. R.S. 46:236.1 of the 1980 Louisiana Legislature provides that by accepting FITAP, the applicant or recipient assigns all support rights to the state.
· The child MUST be under 18 years of age, or 18 years old if a full-time student regularly attending a secondary school or vocational/technical training school.
· The child MUST be a resident of Louisiana.
· The parent MUST apply for a Social Security number for each person for whom an application is made.
· Each adult recipient MUST participate in the FITAP - FIND Work Program unless he/she is exempt under criteria established by the agency.
· The child MUST be a citizen of the United States or meet alien eligibility requirements.
