If your family's need is cash assistance, you may participate in the Pathways Program portion of Families Achieving Independence in Montana (FAIM). This is a time-limited cash assistance program designed to provide parents and caretakers receiving assistance with employment, training, and educational opportunities leading to permanent alternatives to public assistance. A family may receive cash assistance for 24 months. These time limits do nor apply to dependent children or certain adults claiming an exemption such as those with verifiable mental or physical barriers, those caring for a child under age one, or those with no access to child care.
During the 24-month period, each parent, caregiver, or minor child not attending school or equivalent training program must develop a Family Investment Agreement in conjunction with a FAIM coordinator detailing activities needed to bring about self-sufficiency. This may include continued eligibility requirements, work preparation activities, hours of employment, family strengthening activities, and other activities leading to self-sufficiency.
The consequence for failing to comply with the agreement is the loss of the adult's portion of cash assistance for one month for the first non-compliance, three months for the second, six months for the third, and twelve months for the fourth and subsequent non-compliance. Although the needs of the non-complying individual are removed from cash benefits, the time clock continues to tick during the sanction period.
