Consumer Employment Program (DMH) - Overview - South Carolina

Logo of SC DMH Consumer Employment ProgramThe Consumer Employment Program provides an array of employment options to individuals with severe and persistent mental illness throughout the state's seventeen mental health centers. These may include temporary employment (short term, part-time supported employment), mobile work crews (closely supervised center-run crews), supported employment (long term employment), and competitive employment.

The Consumer Employment Program develops jobs in-house (within mental health centers) and in the community. Job coaches assess the career interests of the consumers served, locate appropriate work settings, and train consumers in the following work-readying areas:

·          resume development

·          dressing for work

·          time management

·          accessing transportation

·          controlling symptoms in the work setting

·          social skills needed on the job

Following the consumer's initial employment placement, the job coach provides on-site training of particular job tasks and responsibilities. This may take several weeks, after which ongoing supports are provided--including regular visits to the job site, phone contacts with the working consumer, and follow-up with family or the employer (as appropriate).

Additionally, job coaches offer the following services to consumers seeking work and keeping jobs:

·          Job development: finding the right job for the consumer

·          On-the-job training: individualized training to meet the needs of the consumer and employer

·          Career planning: helping the consumer set long-term goals related to work

·          On-going work supports: job coaches help maintain the vocational momentum by providing on-going coaching to consumer

·          Advocacy at the work-site: fighting stigma and assisting with work-place accommodations

·          Coordination with Social Security staff, case managers and treatment professionals: job coaches assist consumers in dealing with entitlements as well as with medication and other clinical issues.
