VA TANF Alert: Parent Not Eligible for TANF

Because the stepparent's countable income is high enough to make the parent ineligible for TANF benefits, the parent is financially ineligible to be a member of the TANF Assistance Unit and there is stepparent deeming and deeming of the parent's income to the Assistance Unit.

In order to get correct results concerning TANF eligibility and grant amount, you should create a new situation and:

· Answer YES to the question asking if the parent is ineligible for TANF for some other reason besides non-cooperation with DCSE.

· Enter the parent's income when the questions about parent income open. (The questions will not open if you are the parent.)

· Open the question about the size of the Assistance Unit and change your answer so that you do not count the parent (or the stepparent).

· If you are not the parent and you included the parent's income when entering income amounts for "others in the Assistance Unit," re-open the questions about the income of others and change your answers so that you do not include the parent's income.
