VA Question: Size of TANF Assistance Unit

Select the number of people who are, or who would be, in your TANF Assistance Unit.

Include yourself, if appropriate. If the dependent child receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI), adoption assistance, or foster care assistance, that child would not count as a member of the Assistance Unit even though that child makes the unit eligible.

If your family includes multiple Assistance Units, you must enter the information for only one unit. You may use another "What-If" situation column to enter information about another unit.

Special Case: Family Includes Parent and Stepparent

If your family includes both a parent and a stepparent of a dependent child, then include the parent in the unit unless the parent is excluded for some other reason than stepparent deemed income. The stepparent may or may not be included. You can use WorkWORLD to find out which would be most advantageous.

If the stepparent is included, the policies and procedures applicable to assistance unit members apply instead of the deeming procedures.

If the stepparent is not included, WorkWORLD will determine if the stepparent's deemed income makes the parent financially ineligible to be included. If so you will get a Text Result saying that the parent is ineligible. You should then create a new situation. In that new situation, do not include the parent (or stepparent) in the Assistance Unit, and when you are asked if the parent is excluded from the unit, answer that the parent is excluded.
