WorkWORLD asks you about the size of your Medicaid Assistance Unit because the size of the assistance unit is often different from the family size. The assistance unit size is used to determine both your income-eligibility and your resource-eligibility.
For ABD (Aged, Blind or Disabled) Covered Groups: The assistance unit is either 1 or 2.
· If you are married and if both you and your spouse are ABD, and if both of you either receive or are applying for Medicaid, then answer "2"; or
· If you are married and if some of your spouse's income is deemed to you, then answer "2"; or
· If you are not married or if neither of the above conditions are true, answer "1".
NOTE: For ABD Covered groups, the assistance unit for resource-eligibility determination is always 2 for married couples. WorkWORLD uses your answer to the assistance unit question to determine income-eligibility. For more information about assistance units, see VA Medicaid Assistance Unit.
For Family and Child (F&C) Covered Groups: If you receive Medicaid coverage under one of the non-ABD covered groups, such as Pregnant, Child Under Age 19, or Low Income Families with Children, see VA Medicaid Assistance Unit for more information about how the assistance unit size is determined.
Since the Virginia Department of Social Services (DSS) has in some circumstances the flexibility to determine the assistance unit size that is most beneficial to you, you may have to contact DSS to find out the size that would be used in specific circumstances.
NOTE: If you have health insurance coverage under FAMIS, the rules for determining assistance unit size are different. See FAMIS.
