NOTE: On February 12, 2004, Massachusetts announced the reorganization of key agencies within the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. This comes following changes that replaced the former Division of Employment and Training (DET) with the new Division of Unemployment Assistance (DUA).
The Division of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) will operate the state’s unemployment insurance program, including the Medical Security Plan, which provides health insurance to certain unemployed workers. In addition, the DUA will serve as the primary source for Massachusetts’ jobs and economic data.
A newly created division will be called the Division of Career Services (DCS). DCS will provide greater focus on and administer workforce development programs once run by the former DET. This includes operational oversight of Massachusetts’ 32 One-Stop Career Centers, the Workforce Training Fund program, the Alien Labor Certification program, and a host of other employment service programs.
More information about the reorganization is available in a press release available in PDF format (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) at:
http://www.detma.org/pdf/reorg.pdf
As the reorganization is implemented, associated WorkWORLD topics will be revised to reflect name, website, and organizational changes.
The Division of Employment and Training (DET) is the designated agency within the Department of Labor and Workforce Development charged with coordinating placement and training efforts statewide, administering federal training and placement programs, and allocating dedicated federal funds.
DET also administers the unemployment insurance cash benefit program to eligible unemployed workers and provides assessment, employment counseling, job search, and remedial training for workers.
DET can assist employers when a mass separation appears inevitable by advising both labor and management on UI benefits, re-training opportunities and local job prospects. DET personnel are available to meet with company management and workers to outline the appropriate response to layoffs or plant closings, to ensure an orderly shutdown and speed delivery of services to the workforce.
Through DET’s telephone claims center, callers can initiate new claims, reopen existing claims, track the status of claims, and ask questions.
Call the TeleClaim Center at 1-877-626-6800 if you are calling from the following area codes: 351, 413, 508, 774, and 978.
Call the TeleClaim Center at 617-626-6800 if you are calling from any other area code.
