The South Carolina Department of Mental Health is dedicated to the development of school-based programs across the state, with the goal to provide a mental health professional in every school in South Carolina. Under these programs, mental health professionals from community mental health centers set up their offices in schools in order to provide intensive, comprehensive services that are highly flexible, easily accessible and integrated into the everyday settings of children and their families.
The mission of school-based services is to identify and intervene at early points with students who have emotional disturbances and to assist parents, teachers, and counselors to develop comprehensive strategies for resolving these disturbances in a non-stigmatizing environment.
School based services include:
· Individual counseling
· Family counseling
· Group counseling
· Crisis intervention
· Psychiatric consultation
· Consultations w/school staff
· Staff development workshops.
Early intervention services include:
· Education Groups
· After-School Programs
· Violence Prevention Programs
· Referral to Community Services
· In-School Suspension Counseling
· Multi-Systems Community Teams
· Parent Workshops/Support Groups.
Children and youth are provided services with parental permission with the exception of emergency cases when intervention is required to prevent harm to self or others.
