Note - Homeless Shelter Costs Deduction

Because you are homeless yet have shelter expenses, you may use either your actual expenses to compute the Excess Shelter Deduction or take the Standard Homeless Shelter Deduction when calculating Net Income. No household may use both of these deductions.

If you answer "YES" to the question "Do you have verifiable expenses due to costs of shelter that you do not receive for free?", WorkWORLD will then automatically determine, based on your responses, which deductions and allowances are most appropriate for your situation.

In the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program), the Excess Shelter Deduction permits you to use actual costs of shelter expenses when computing the deduction. You may also be able to use Standard Utility Allowances in the calculation. Additionally, if your household contains a member with a disability or who is elderly, the normal caps on this deduction do not apply.

The Standard Homeless Shelter Deduction, currently $143 in all states, may result in a higher allotment if you are otherwise eligible and have low shelter expenses.

WorkWORLD will determine which deduction your household is eligible to take, and which is most advantageous for you. The amount of the deduction, if any, will be displayed in the numerical results table as "Shelter Costs Deduction" under the "Details of Food Stamps Net Income" section.

NOTE: Prior to 2001, it was common practice in many states to automatically grant either the Standard Homeless Deduction or Excess Shelter Deduction to homeless households. Effective January 20, 2001 new regulations became effective requiring a homeless household to have verifiable expenses in order to be eligible for these deductions.
