Medical Spend-Down enables individuals to qualify for some medical assistance even if their income exceeds the state's income standards for Medicaid eligibility. Even if income increases, individuals may still be eligible for assistance under the Medical Spend-Down provision.
The excess income of medically needy individuals is referred to as the spend-down amount. This amount is applied to the amount of medical expenses for a medical claim under the program, thus reducing the amount of expense for medical services. Previous unpaid medical expenses can be used to reduce the amount of the medical spend-down.
Each time an individual incurs medical expenses, the medical care provider should file a claim. A written notice will be provided by the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) indicating the amount of payment and the provider that should be paid.
