The State Medicaid Plan includes the purchase of medically necessary Durable Medical Equipment (DME) for Medicaid recipients over the age of 21 in Fee for Service or SoonerCare Choice.
DME is:
· Equipment that can withstand repeated use
· Equipment that is used to serve a medical purpose
· Equipment that is not useful in the absence of an illness or injury
· Equipment that is used in the most appropriate setting including the home or workplace
The provision of DME states specific cost and conditions that must be met prior to purchase. The policy change also includes the procurement of medically necessary supplies, which is defined as those disposable items that are used for the care and treatment of a medical condition. Items not covered include: diapers, underpads, medicine cups, eating utensils, and personal comfort items.
Medicaid recipients 0-21 years of age fall under the EPSDT (Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment) requirements of the Medicaid Act. SoonerCare Plus recipients receive DME through their Health Plan.
Questions about DME may be directed to Customer Service at the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) 405/522-6205 or 800/522-0114.
