Disabled And Elderly Exception (Self) - SNAP (Food Stamps)

Generally, people who live together and customarily purchase and prepare meals together are considered a household for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program) purposes. However, there is a special exception for married couples, at least one of whom is both disabled and elderly and unable to purchase and prepare meals, who live with others. If the following two conditions are met, then you and your spouse can choose to be considered a household of two even if you customarily purchase and prepare meals with others:

·        You are at least 60 years old and cannot purchase and prepare meals due to a permanent disability, and

·        The gross income of the other household members (excluding you and your spouse) is less than 165 percent of the Federal poverty level.

NOTE: This version of WorkWORLD does not calculate SNAP benefits for the special case described above. If you would like WorkWORLD to calculate benefits for a married couple living with others, at least one of whom is both disabled and elderly and unable to purchase and prepare meals, and declaring themselves to be a separate household, please email us at workworld@vcu.edu. The responses we get will help us prioritize the enhancements for new versions of WorkWORLD.
