If you receive benefits as a spouse or child, you are eligible to receive up to 50% of the worker's Primary Insurance Amount (PIA). This amount plus the PIA is called the Family Maximum. The actual amount of your benefit will be dependent on the number of others receiving benefits on this same earnings record, because in most circumstances no more than the Family Maximum can be paid in total. In other words, if two of you are receiving benefits on another’s earnings record, each of you will get 25% of the worker's PIA.
Your check amount could be different from the amount you should receive, however, if it is being changed because of previous under- or over-payments.
Your actual benefit amount will be shown in your original award letter from SSA. If it has changed, the new amount will be shown in the letter SSA sent you to notify you of the change. These notification letters are discussed in a separate topic, "SSA Award Letter & Notice of Change".
If you do not know how much your SSDI benefit is supposed to be, and/or if you think that your check amount is being changed because of previous Under/Over Payments, contact your SSA Claims Representative to find out your benefit amount.
