To be financially eligible for Supplementary Security Income (SSI) you must meet the following two tests:
· Your total income (earned and unearned) must be low enough that you would receive at least $1 of SSI cash benefit; and
· Your resources can not exceed the SSI Resource Limit of $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple who both receive SSI.
NOTE: SGA is not Applied Under SSI to People Who are Blind.
If you meet the medical definition of blindness used by SSA, Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) is not a factor in deciding your SSI eligibility.
· If you have too much total income to receive at least $1 of SSI cash benefit, and if you have work expenses, you should claim those expenses as a Blind Work Expense (BWE);
· If you still have too much total income to receive at least $1 of SSI cash benefit, you would look at the possibility of using a PASS to reduce your countable income; and
· If you have excess resources, you should look at the possibility of including those resources in a Plan for Achieving Self-Support (PASS).
